Batch Files in Windows® 7
Are you aware of the role of batch files in Windows 7 and various issues that can occur with them?
Batch files are a set of commands with extension CMD or BAT. They are used to simplify the time consuming tasks. They are used for purposes like collecting information, system configuration, simplification of complicated tasks and administration automation. It contains various tools for effective functioning. For example, Power Cfg tool is used for power management, TZUtil for making the time zone, BCDEdit for boot configuration and Defrag command for defragmenting or splitting data into smaller units. The batch files can be used for backup files and folders. To create a batch file, you need to follow certain steps. Click 'Start' menu, go to 'All Programs', move to 'Accessories' and select 'Notepad' from there. Enter the commands in the notepad for making batch file. Then, save it with an extension cmd or bat for example:-filename.cmd. Suppose, you want to save your images in E: drive. The batch file for this purpose may be like xcopy 'E:\Documents and Settings\username\My documents\My images' 'D:\ 'Image back up/e/y'. This batch file will make a copy of your images in E: drive and paste it on the folder 'Image backup' on D: drive. If you simple put D:, then the backup file will overlap the existing file. So, always create a new folder and then backup. /e means backup all directories and sub directories whereas /y indicates overwrite on existing files.
The problems with Windows 7 batch files are given below:
- Batch files getting stuck
- Not functioning
- Problems caused by lengthy batch files
Batch files getting stuck
The users may find the batch files not working after writing with cmd or bat ending. Certain parts of the command may get highlighted and you cannot move further. It is not the problem of your Windows 7 operating system. Check whether you have entered the right command using command prompt or Internet Explorer. If any default edit action is there, then you will not be able to run the batch file. Another cause of this problem may be the incorrect format of your command. If this is the case, then convert your commands to Windows format.
Sometimes, batch files may not function properly and you will not be able to access the function. In such cases, you have to check the command you have written. If there is any space in the string of command, this problem will occur. This is because the DOS cannot interpret the spaces in the command. You must delete the extra space and try again. It will resolve your problem.
Problems caused by lengthy batch files
Problems can occur due to the long size of batch files in Windows 7. The DOS cannot execute such long commands. The first thing you have to do is to make the commands simple by fragmenting into small parts. Then, the batch file will start working. So, for the best functioning, create small command lines. This is another tip for troubleshooting.
