The 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC), which is being held from February 27 to March 1 in Barcelona, Spain, will offer a glimpse of devices that will set the stage for mobile technology in the coming year. At the event, several new smart phones are expected to be announced across various platforms. Among these, many mobile phone manufacturers will unveil Windows Phone 7-based handsets. Let’s see what’s in store for Windows Phone 7 enthusiasts at MWC 2012.
Microsoft at MWC
Unlike the MWCs held previously, Microsoft won’t address a press conference this year. However, the company will organize a party at the congress. Officials from Microsoft will be present at MWC and hold discussions with partners, suppliers, and vendors regarding Windows Phone 7 and the company’s future plans. Microsoft will also launch Windows 8 Consumer Preview at a separate event on February 29, 2012 in Barcelona.
Windows Phone 7-based mobiles from Nokia
The Finnish mobile maker Nokia is scheduled to introduce several smart phones at MWC. At its press conference on February 27, 2012, Nokia unveiled its entry-level Lumia 610 with Windows Phone 7. According to the company’s officials, Lumia 610 that will cost $254 is targeted at young buyers. Nokia also announced that the Lumia 900 will be released globally, with a launch in Canada in April 2012. Windows Phone 7 users can now download the beta version of the Skype app.
Windows Phone 7-based mobiles from other manufacturers
ZTE is slated to unveil a Windows Phone with the Tango update for the Chinese market at MWC. Among other companies with Windows Phones lined up for MWC, Fujitsu will launch several models for the European and North American markets. LG officials have denied rumors that they will announce the Miracle handset at MWC. With the retail version of Windows 8 due to be launched later in 2012, the success of Windows Phone means a lot to Microsoft. If these phones become popular, it could set the ball rolling for Windows 8-based touch devices.
