It is expected that the dominance of the operating system market by Microsoft will come to an end by the year 2016. According to the study of a research firm named International Data Corporation (IDC), the Android operating system of Google will leave behind the Windows operating system of Microsoft as the most popular operating system in the world by 2016.
The study that took into consideration various computer sectors, such as personal computers, smartphones, and mobile devices under the category ‘smart connected devices’, said that personal computers running on Windows operating system would slip from their current market share of 36% to just 25% in 2016. The study also predicted that Android devices would rise from 29% to 31%, whereas devices such as the iPad and iPhone that run Apple iOS operating system will increase their share of the market from 14.6% to 17%.
”In many if not all instances, the smartphone will be the primary connection to the Internet,” said Will Stofega, IDC programme director, Mobile Phone Technologies and Trends. These projections indicate that people are shifting away from the traditional desktops and moving towards mobile computing devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.
