Dealing with RAW Format now made easier by Microsoft®

This is something surely exciting for all the aspiring photographers. Microsoft has launched ‘Microsoft Camera Codec Pack’ that will be very helpful for photographers who click pictures in the RAW format. Also, there is a contest, which can make you win a Nikon D5000 DSLR camera. There are a total of 10 such cameras to win.
‘Microsoft Camera Codec Pack’ is basically a utility that lets Windows 7 users to open and view pictures clicked in the RAW format. This utility works as a substitute to the RAW filters made by either the camera manufacturer or by any third party.
Working on RAW photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery
If you do not have any other filter installed in your system that supports the RAW format and have Windows Live Photo Gallery instead, then you may get the following dialogue:
With this utility, the Windows Live Photo Gallery in your Windows 7 PC will easily handle RAW pictures just like JPEGs. You can then easily import and manage all your photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. However, you cannot edit RAW photos with the photo retouching features unless you convert those photos to JPEGs.

If you do not have a DSLR and want to own one, then don’t wait. Go and get a DSLR from a friend or relative or colleague and click some cool RAW photos on the topic, ‘feathers, fins and fur’. Microsoft has launched a contest on the Windows blog. All you have to do is to send your best RAW photo with this theme and send it across. You also have to write a small paragraph wherein you have to explain on how Windows helps in your photography. There are 10 Nikon D5000 cameras to be won. So don’t wait. This contest ends on August 8th, 2011 and is open for the residents of the United States.
