Nokia has marked an agreement with Polar Mobile, a Canadian mobile content solutions company to develop apps for its forthcoming Windows Phone offerings and its present line of phones based on Symbian and MeeGo platforms. Nokia intends to source the developed apps to some major companies including Wired UK, The Globe and Mail, Advertising Age Shanghai Daily, 7 DAYS and Kompass.
Out of in excess of 300 apps which will be developed as part of the collaboration, Nokia has decided to make the first 50 applications available via it's Ovi store only on its Symbian-based smartphones.
"Nokia is excited about the opportunity to team up with Polar Mobile to bring hundreds of quality apps to consumers around the world," said Richard White, General Manager for Nokia Canada. "Polar Mobile's ability to scale and attract a global set of brands is strategic in supporting Nokia's efforts in offering compelling apps and experiences for our users”.
So far Polar Mobile has launched a plethora of apps for over 300 media brands across 10 countries including magazines, newspapers, online portals and other small and medium businesses. The company is serving elite customers including Time, Vogue CBS Sports, GQ and Variety.
Kunal Gupta, Chief Executive Officer, Polar Mobile said, “Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer in the world. With smart phones, they’re hungry for a comeback. We are thrilled that Nokia has chosen Polar Mobile to provide top tier media apps for their devices. Nokia’s global consumer reach is important for many of our customers, especially in Europe, Middle East and Asia. Partnering with Nokia helps our media customers continue to grow their mobile audiences”.
The first Nokia Windows Phone 7 smartphones series is slated to hit the market in the first half of next year. Earlier this year, Nokia entered into a collaboration with Microsoft to use Windows Phone 7, with the U.S. line of mobile phones from Nokia. With these deals at place, Nokia intends to further strengthen its position in the worldwide mobile market.
