It is somewhat difficult to draw a comparison between gaming apps and other apps used on a smartphone. But a study, conducted in the U.S., has revealed that people mostly use their mobile phones to send and retrieve text messages instead of playing games like Angry Birds.
The Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project carried out a study and informed that 92% of users are inclined towards sending and receiving text messages with special text messaging apps which are pre-installed on their smartphone. Also, 92% of smartphone users go for picture clicking apps in order to capture memorable events. On the other hand, only 64% of mobile users enjoy playing games on their handsets.
The survey also revealed that users who do not use smartphone, if given the access, would still prefer to use an sms app from their mobile handset. Generally, a text messaging app can be considered as an app for communication purposes however other apps which are offered for entertainment also lost the race.
According to the study, only 54% of mobile users utilize the battery of their mobile phones to watch videos and 59% of users go on social networking websites. At present, when everyone is busy in tweeting their status on Twitter, it was a surprise to know that merely 15% users access Twitter from their mobile devices. Moreover, a very small set of people go on websites and browse the Internet directly from their mobile phones even if their phone is having a built-in browser.
The study also revealed that Blackberry, which is a popular mobile platform for corporate users, is primarily used to access e-mail apps. Only 24% of Blackberry users played a game on it one month prior to study. However, Symbian, Windows Phone 7 and Android platforms are preferred when it comes to gaming. Close to two-thirds of respondents for each platform agreed that they have played a game on their mobile device since last one month.
Therefore, as the survey reveals, a mobile phone which is trying to replace a computing device in near future will still be majorly used for communication purposes.
