UMass Lowell Varsity students develop amazing apps

By IYOGI TECHNICAL SERVICES, Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Here is news which will leave you goggle-eyed. Suppose you are at the University of Massachusett’s Lowell campus and need a parking space or you wish to know the location of the university’s shuttle bus: what do you do? Most of us would be asking for directions.

Here is something different. In 2010, Microsoft awarded Associate Prof. Benyuan Liu with a dozen smartphones for his teaching and research. UMass Lowell is one of the twenty schools that were selected for this equipment grant. This grant allowed developers to use services, tools and equipments to invent their own cloud-enabled mobile applications using Windows Azure and Windows Phone 7.

Peng Xia and Shan Lu, who are taught by Prof. Liu developed the ‘UML Parking Finder’ which allowed students of UMass Lowell campus to locate a quick parking spot and Jason Chan, I-Hsuan Lin and Xiawei Liu developed the ‘UML Shuttle Tracker’ that helped users in the university campus to find information on the shuttle bus.

These are not the only apps that Prof Liu’s class has developed; others which are equally intriguing are: ‘UML 4-Ride’ that helped students with ride service; ‘Sleepsafe’ for detecting sleep walking; ‘UML App, a information obtaining app about UMass Lowell. Others include ‘iBridge’ for scanning barcodes, ‘ZurianSwap’ for translating signs ad ‘RSS Reader’ for keeping you up-to-date with latest news and information.
It seems with so many wonderful apps developed by Prof Liu’s students, little things that must have bothered the students and professors of UMass Lowell campus will be a thing of the past. And these apps can save you a lot of time as well.
