Windows 7 sales cross 600 million licenses
Windows 7, which was launched by Microsoft in 2009, has sold more than 600 million licenses across the globe. Microsoft revealed this at the Computex trade show in Tapei. According to the latest data released by NetApplications, Windows 7 now accounts for 40.51 percent of the operating system market. The eleven year old Windows XP still occupies the first position with a 44.85 percent market share. The official Microsoft support for Windows XP expires in April 2014, which could result in a further increase in Windows 7 sales.
Coinciding with the launch of Windows 8 Release Preview, Microsoft announced the Windows 8 upgrade program. People who buy a new computer with Windows 7 pre-installed during the offer period, will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $14.99. The Windows 8 upgrade offer period is applicable from June 2, 2012 to January 31, 2013.
Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of Microsoft's original equipment manufacturer (OEM) division, is excited about their new product launches lined up for 2012. According to him, "This is the biggest launch time in Microsoft's history". The retail edition of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 will be launched later in 2012.
