To catch up with the huge app base of Apple App Store and Google Play (formerly known as Android Market), Microsoft is keenly focusing on the number of apps in its Windows Phone Marketplace. The Windows Marketplace has now crossed the 80,000 apps mark. It is a remarkable achievement by the latest entrant in the smartphone industry.
If we take a look at the current app scenario in the competitive app market, the Apple App Store stands at the top with more than 550,000 apps and then comes Google Play with over 450,000 apps. Within a year and a half of its launch, Windows Marketplace has emerged as the third biggest app store with over 80,000 apps now.
All the 80,000+ apps cannot be found in one place because of the regional nature of the Windows Marketplace. The highest number of apps can be found in the U.S. store (69,123 apps), followed by the UK, France, and Spain. Around 9,500 apps have been withdrawn by the publishers recently.
With this pace, no doubt Windows Marketplace will definitely break the barrier of 100,000 apps by the end of May.
