The recent leaks of Windows Phone 8, also known as Apollo, have indicated that the upcoming mobile operating system from Microsoft will have the same kernel as Windows 8 operating system. At present, Windows Phone 7.5 is the latest mobile operating system in the market. The latest information indicates that unlike Apple and Google, Microsoft is planning to create a single unified ecosystem, which will run seamlessly on smartphones, personal computers, tablets, and other multimedia devices.
It is anticipated that Windows Phone Apollo will share many features like Bitlocker, networking stack, kernel, and a few other security elements with Windows 8. Earlier it was expected that Microsoft will be designing Windows Phone Apollo on the Windows CE kernel, which provided the base for the Windows Phone 7 operating system as well. However, all the recent leaks suggest that Windows Phone 8 will come with a cross platform support, that includes C/C++ programming on smartphones and tablet devices. This also goes well with the Metro User Interface, which Microsoft has already implemented on Windows Phone, and is going to be the base of Windows 8 operating system as well.
According to experts, this move by Microsoft is a promising initiative that may backfire on the software giant if it is not implemented properly. They believe that if this strategy of a unified ecosystem for all devices is successfully implemented, it will certainly get an edge over its main rivals - Apple and Google.
