It has been a little more than a week since the AVG Antivirus app has found a foothold in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. However, to the dismay of its makers, it has been removed from the marketplace. According to Brandon Watson, who is working in Microsoft as a Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone, the AVG Antivirus app is no longer available in Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. In one of his tweets, he revealed that AVG Antivirus was removed after an external investigation, which could help Microsoft to identify the faults in the program. Although the AVG Antivirus app was downloaded by several users from the marketplace, it unexpectedly showed signs of vulnerability. Many users questioned about its performance and genuineness. Just then, Justin Angel, a former Microsoft employee coordinated with an eminent blogger named Rafael Rivera and cracked the hidden functionality of the AVG Antivirus app.
As found out by Angel, the security program was silently using a GEO location technique to track Windows Phone 7 devices and transmit the user’s personal data. Angel found that the program was improperly transferring the phone’s model, e-mail address and location to the AVG server. As this was against the Windows Phone 7 certification guidelines, Justin Angel’s observation aided Microsoft to remove the app from Windows Phone Marketplace.
Additionally, Rafael Rivera made it clear that the app displays advertisements and runs a scan to look for EICAR test strings, which are normally used to test antivirus software instead of malicious content.
Just before the app was pulled away from the Windows Phone Marketplace, AVG responded that the data that is sent to its server is only used for GPS tracking. According to a blog, AVG defended and stated that "The company promised that it doesn't sell the data or share it without the user's permission and that it doesn't access someone's location with permission.”
As of now, the download link for AVG is not working in the Windows Phone Marketplace. However, there are other effective security apps which you can deploy on your Windows Phone 7 smartphone.
