Microsoft Windows Phone Marketplace has now over 50,000 apps
Windows Phone users will never run short of apps as Microsoft surpasses the 50,000 mark of apps and games collection in its Windows Phone Marketplace. It has now a collection of over 50,126 items from 13,002 publishers. More apps are on the way as they are being published at an increasing rate of 265 items every day.
Windows Phone Marketplace has hit this milestone much earlier than expected. The last big milestone of 40,000 apps was achieved in the previous month and a staggering 45,000 mark was hit on December 12. Microsoft expected to hit the 50,000 mark by the first week of January, 2012, but to everyone’s surprise Windows Phone Marketplace achieved the target pretty soon. Microsoft has been aggressively uploading apps and games for its customers and it took only a year to hit such a huge milestone. More than a third of the apps were said to be uploaded in the last three months with nearly 10,000 apps in just a span of 40 days.
However, the actual count available to Windows Phone users is much lower than total number of items published. About 6,000 of them have been removed by Microsoft or by their respective publishers. In addition, some of the apps are available through specific market, reducing the total count to less than 42,000 apps.
Although it is a big achievement for Microsoft, but the stiff competition from its archrivals is still on. Apple and Google have already crossed a staggering 500,000 mark of apps collection in their respective App Stores earlier this year. Let us hope that Windows Phone Marketplace is all set to create new records in the coming year and never let Windows Phone users run out of any apps.
