Announcing the latest achievement of Microsoft during the launch of Windows Phone 7 in China, Simon Leung, the head of Microsoft’s Chinise division said that the Windows Marketplace now contains over 70,000 apps. Leung also claimed that the number of new apps being published for the platform is increasing at the rate of 300 per day.
According to Microsoft, in January there were 60,000 titles in the Windows Marketplace. There are 100,000 registered developers for Windows Phone. This indicates that there are more people who are able to create apps than those that have actually created apps, a statistic that Microsoft would no doubt like to make vice-versa.
Microsoft has to cover a long distance to compete with its strong rivals Android and iOS as the current offering of apps by the software giant, when compared to the more than 400,000 Android applications or over half a million iOS apps offered by Apple for its iPhone, iPod, and iPad devices, is very meager.
