Yandex, the 5th largest search engine in the world, will now be the default search engine in Russia for smartphones based on Windows Phone. It is a Russian search engine and advertising company, which holds 64 percent of the market share in Russia - far greater than Google. In Russia, yandex.ru is said to be the most popular website. Yandex is also widely used in countries like Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Belarus.
Sources have it that Yandex has joined hands with giants like Nokia, Samsung , HTC, and Microsoft. It will now be the default search engine in all the latest smartphones based on Windows Phone operating system.
Samsung Omnia W is the first smartphone to get the taste of Yandex. It is already selling well in Russia. Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, which are Windows Phone-based, are expected to hit the Russian market by the end of December. Both the phones will have Yandex as the default search engine.
HTC, which has released some of its Windows Phone smartphones like Titan, Mozart, and Radar, is also planning to release an updated version installed with Yandex search engine.
“Windows Phone is a new operating system with great potential. It is bound to catch attention in Russia. It’s good to know that the Windows Phone users in this country will have familiar Yandex search on their new devices,” says Tigran, Khudaverdyan, head of web portal and mobile services at Yandex.
Yandex, also known for developing apps and services for mobile OS, has developed two new apps for Windows Phone-Yandex.Maps and Yandex.Market. It has also promised to develop more apps in the future.
