What are the common issues which may come with Firewall in Windows 7 and how can they be fixed?
Windows 7 is the latest Operating System developed by Microsoft Windows to be used in personal and business computers. Its server counterpart is Windows Server 2008 R2, which was released at the same time. There are various changes to Windows 7 as to Windows Vista like multi-touch support, redesigned Windows shell, new taskbar called Superbar, HomeGroup, a networking system and further improvements in performance. Firewalls are used to protect your secured or private network from unsecured public network. It monitors all incoming and outgoing software. There are different types of firewall. The first is Network-Level Firewall which monitors packet headers and filters traffic based on IP address or remotely protocols. The second type is Circuit-Level Firewall which filters data packets based on session rules and monitors TCP handshaking between packets. Another is the application level firewall, which is more scrutinized than other firewalls, and do screening at application level data. Then is Stateful Multi-level Firewall which filters data at network level and process application-level data.

- Miscellaneous Solutions
Firewall not starting up
You may experience a situation in which firewall cannot be accessed. The error message may be varying and most common is ‘Access denied’. The cause may be that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) was not running. This service, in most cases, would cause firewall not to start up. For checking it, you need to go to Services.msc, then click 'OK', Double-click 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service', and in the Startup type box select 'Manual' to 'Apply'.
Not allowing anti-virus to update
You may notice that anti-virus software may have trouble in updating its database because of Firewall restrictions. You must add Exceptions for fixing it by typing firewall in search box. Now choose ‘Allow a program or feature to connect through Windows Firewall’, and then select 'Change Settings'. The firewall may ask you for confirmation or a password. You may now select which application or network to allow connections to outside network.
Windows Firewall may block a particular program and you may solve the issue by selecting 'Unblock this program' in the 'Security Alert'. Some times, Group Policy settings can fix the issue. If some program have problem in accessing Internet then you can add that program to exceptions list and this will enable the firewall to open range of ports. Adding the port exception can allow the port to communicate freely and enable logging to identify the source of inbound traffic.
