TCP/IP Configuration in Windows® 7
Do you want to know the various tips to change TCP/IP configuration in Windows 7 system?
It will be easier to manage TCP/IP settings, if you are using automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP will automatically allot Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to the systems on your network, if your network supports it. If you use DHCP, then you do not have to change your TCP/IP settings, if you move your PC to another location and DHCP does not want you to manually configure TCP/IP settings, such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). If you are using a router, the first step that you have to do before changing IP address will be to disconnect it, and plug your modem's cable directly into your PC. Also, removing the router will simplify the process of changing the IP address. You may also need to restart your modem and PC to get back your Internet connectivity after removing the router.
Following are the tips to change TCP/IP configuration in Windows 7 system:
- View network connections
- Specify IPv4 or IPv6 address settings
- Specify DNS server address settings
View network connections
As the first step, you should open Network Connections. For this first, click the 'Start' button and then click 'Control Panel'. Now in the search box, type adapter, and then under Network and Sharing Center, click 'View Network Connections'. You should then right click the connection that you want to change, and then click 'Properties'. If you are asked for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Then, click the 'Networking' tab and under 'This connection, uses the following items', you have to click either 'Internet Protocol Version 4' (TCP/IPv4) or 'Internet Protocol Version 6' (TCP/IPv6) and then click 'Properties'.
Specify IPv4 or IPv6 address settings
Next step is to specify IPv4 IP address settings,. For this, get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and after that click 'Ok'. To give IP address, click 'Use the following IP addresses', and then in the IP address, Subnet mask and Default gateway boxes, type your IP address settings. In order to specify IPv6 IP address settings, you will have to get IP settings automatically using DHCP, and click 'Obtain an IPv6 address automatically', and then you have to click 'Ok'. After that, to specify an IP address, you should click 'Use the following IPv6 address' and then in the IPv6 address, Subnet prefix length, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
The final step is to specify the DNS server address settings. For this, you have to get a DNS server address automatically using DHCP. Then, click 'Obtain DNS server address automatically’ and click 'Ok'. After that to specify a DNS server address, you have to click 'Use the following DNS server addresses' and then, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.
