Fix Issues in Windows® 7 Proxy Settings
How to resolve different issues while setting up proxy settings in Windows 7?
Proxy settings are used to inform Internet Explorer about the network address of an intermediary server or proxy server that is used between the browser and the Internet on some networks. Changing proxy settings is necessary if you are connecting to the Internet through a business network. By default, the Internet Explorer automatically detects the proxy settings. You can manually set a proxy with information supplied by your network administrator. For this open 'Internet Explorer' by clicking the 'Start' button. Then in the 'Search' box, type 'Internet Explorer', and then, in the list of results, select 'Internet Explorer'. Now click the 'Tools' button and then click 'Internet Options'. After that click the 'Connections' tab, and then click onr 'LAN settings'. In that, select the 'Use a proxy server' for your LAN check box. Then in the 'Address'category, you could type the address of the proxy server and in the 'Port' box, type the port number. If your network needs separate proxy addresses for different services, such as HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP, then click the 'Advanced' button, and then type the individual proxy server addresses to use. After making changes, click 'OK' until you return to Internet Explorer.
Following are the issues that might occur while setting up proxy settings in Windows 7:
- TCP interception
- Issues in HTTP authentication
- Problems in HTTP caches
Interception in a TCP connection creates several problems. The original destination IP and port is informed to the proxy. Sometimes there occur cross-site attacks which depend on certain performance of intercepting proxies that will not verify or have access to information about the original destination. It could be solved by using an integrated packet-level and application level appliance. Now it is able to communicate this information between the packet handler and the proxy.
Issues in HTTP authentication
The intercepting problem also causes problems for HTTP authentication. The browser considers that it is communicating with the server rather than a proxy. This will cause problems where an intercepting proxy requires authentication. Then the user will connect to a site which also requires authentication.
Problems in HTTP caches occur as some requests and responses are not cacheable by a shared cache. These are also caused by intercepting connections. The proxy servers that cache web pages won't read the HTML documents. The proxy server between the browser and the web server probably continues to deliver the out-of-date page to the client.
