Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) in Windows® 7
Are you inquisitive about Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and its usage in Windows 7?
WPA stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access. This technology has been designed to work with existing Wi-Fi products that have been enabled with WEP. It is designed as WEP replacement and answer to all WEP weaknesses. It uses Temporal Key Integrity Protocol with message integrity check. It also has mutual pre shared key authentication scheme using 802.11x/EAP. The WPA has two certification modes that are Enterprise and Personal. It improves the data encryption through the temporal key integrity protocol. The mechanism used is counter mode / CBC-MAC protocol called Advanced Encryption Standard. Windows 7 supports Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) without any updates.
The following are some of the details about Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and its usage in Windows 7:
- Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) set-up
- WPA in Personal mode
- WPA in Enterprises mode
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) set-up
Open the 'Start' menu and select the 'Control Panel'. Then, select 'Network and Internet Connections' and select 'Manage Wireless Networks', and then select 'Add'. You can then manually create a network profile and select the 'Change connection settings' option. Make sure that boxes are checked accordingly and then select the 'Security' tab and then click 'Ok' three times. For advance configuration settings, you need to select 'Advanced settings' and make sure that you specify 'Authentication' mode. It needs to be checked under the '802.1 X' tab. In the drop down menu, select the 'User authentication' and click 'Ok'.
WPA in Personal mode
It has been designed for home and office environment. It uses pre-shared key or pass phrase that is entered manually. The security level is based on this PSK. So, you could use both alphanumeric and non-alphanumeric characters. Personal mode uses method of encryption as Enterprises – per session, per user and per packet encryption with AES (WPA 2) or (WPA).
It operates in Managed mode with the authentication server (IAS or Radius). With this Enterprise mode, you can meet rigorous requirement of enterprise security. Wi-Fi Protected Access can be used in your network. For this Enterprise mode, you only need firmware upgrade (access point or wireless router) and driver update (client updater). You can take the updates from vendor’s websites. You need to upgrade operation system also.
