Performance of Scandisk in Windows® 7
Discuss the performance of Scandisk in the Windows 7 Operating System.
Scandisk is an efficient disk checking tool in MS-DOS Operating System. To maintain system efficiency, you need to run the scandisk on a regular basis. It would scan the system, check for damaged files, look for bad clusters in the computer's hard drive, and make repairs whenever possible. It has the capability to repair the damaged clusters and file system on the hard drive. This utility has a convenient user-friendly interface and it also comes with more configuration options. Scandisk utility might not work in NT base Operating System. So, instead of this utility, Operating Systems such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP etc use CHKDSK. In the Windows 7 Operating System, instead of the scandisk utility, a new version called CHKDSK is used. Scandisk is an efficient tool in the Windows Operating System, which would scan the system for damaged files and fix the errors automatically if it is possible.

- About FAT, CHKDSK
- Performance of scandisk
Scandisk fixes the problems or errors in a hard disk due to the blue screen error or the freezing up of the Windows Operating System. The function of the scandisk is to check the errors on the hard disk and fix them. When it scans the disk and finds a bad cluster, it would recover the data from the damaged cluster by moving the data into a new location on the disk. In the latest version of Windows Operating System, scandisk is replaced by CHKDSK.
About FAT, CHKDSK
CHKDSK stands for check disk and it is a file system error checking tool which could be run manually or automatically. It detects the damaged files and bad clusters on the hard drive. FAT is the short name used for file allocation table. It is used to organize data on the hard disk. FAT is the native file system for Windows.
In Windows 7, scandisk utility is not available. Instead, CHKDSK is used which helps to detect the hard disk and solve the problem. To run the scandisk in the Windows Operating System, click 'Start', select 'My computer' and open the properties of 'C' drive. Then a window would open. Click the 'Tools' tab, and press the ‘Check Now’ button under ‘Error Checking’. Select the ‘Automatically Fix File System Errors’ and ‘Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors’ options.
