What is a firewall in Windows 7?
A firewall is hardware or software or even combination of both, it is the firewall which authorizes the computer to allow or disallow programs or malicious software from Internet from entering into our computer. The firewall has certain set of rules provided into it, of which some are default and other user defined, anyone who uses a firewall in his/her computer may change certain default settings if required. The Firewall in Windows 7 gives you flexibility to tune your settings to the environment you are logged in to the internet. It mainly gives you three different firewall settings, Home, Work and Public. So, if you are using your computer at home, it will allow most of the data packets to pass through your computer. Turn on and off firewall in Windows 7
First you have to click 'Start' menu from the taskbar or you may press Windows key from your keyboard, then you will have to click 'Control panel' which appears on the right side of the start menu. If your screen control panel window is set in category view, click 'Network and Internet', a new Window opens, then on the left side of your screen please click 'System and Security', a new Window open, you will find 'Windows Firewall' as the second option. Click 'Check Firewall status', another window opens, on the left hand side of your screen you will find the fourth option, Change windows Firewall on or off, click the option. By default it will always be on, in any case if you want to turn off, you may click 'Turn Windows Firewall Off' button. This can be done for Home and Work together and public separate. In case your Control Panel view is set to large or small icons, you will find Windows Firewall, click it and follow the same instructions mentioned above.
Change notification settings
Click 'Windows Firewall' as mentioned above either from category view or icon view. On the left hand side of your computer screen you will find an option, 'Change notification settings', click it and a new Window opens, Under Turn On Windows Firewall Option , you may click, 'Notify me when Windows firewall blocks a new program'. If you do not want any notifications while Windows firewall blocks a program, unclick the same option.
Click on 'Windows Firewall' from the control panel if it is in icon view or from Network and Internet and then System and Security if it is in category view. Click on 'Advanced settings' which appear on the left hand side of your screen. You will find a number of options from the page that opens in windows settings. This is where you can define new rules for programs of your choice. For that, you need to click on 'Connection security rules', a right side of the screen you will options to set new rules for the program, click 'New Rule' and set your rules.
