Windows 7 is the latest Operating system released by Microsoft. It supports networking at a great level and has many tools and options to improve the stability of the computer networking. Drive sharing is one of the best features in Windows 7. Drive sharing feature allows you to share the drive on your computer with other users in the network. Hence, you do not need a USB drive or CD/DVD to carry data from one computer to another in the Network. Windows XP also supports drive sharing. So, if you have computers with Windows XP and Windows 7 in the network, you can enjoy the benefits of drive sharing with high security. Almost all the versions of Windows Operating system supports drive sharing. To share a drive in Windows 7, right click on the drive letter in ‘My computer’ and click on ‘Sharing and security’ and enable the sharing option. You can also share particular file or folder in Windows 7. While sharing the data you can set permission for read, write or full access for each user account. The shared drives of all computers in the network can be viewed in 'My Network'.
Following are advantages and disadvantages of drive sharing in Windows 7:
- Network drive Mapping
- Data sharing and transferring
- Disadvantages of drive sharing
Network drive Mapping
You can map a shared network drive as one of the drives on your computer. To map the drive, you need to right click on the shared drive of the computer in network places and click on 'Map network' drive. You can assign a drive letter to the Mapped drive. Once the drive is mapped, you can directly save data to the mapped drive mapped drive. You can view the mapped drive in ‘My computer' and use it as one of the drives in your computer. The data saved on a Mapped drive would not be lost even if your computer crashes, because all the data is saved on the mapped drive is saved on the computer which shares the drive.
Data sharing and transferring
Data sharing becomes easier through the shared drive. You can save data in a drive and share it with other users in the network. Users in the network would be able to view, modify or delete the file as per the user rights set for them. You might need to transfer data from one computer to another. Usually a USB drive or CD/DVD was used to transfer data. With the help of drive sharing, you just need to share the folder or drive that you want to transfer to a computer in the network and any user in the network can copy it from the shared drive.
There are some disadvantages of drive sharing in Windows 7. Shared drives can be accessed by any user in the network unless proper user rights are defined. This can be threat for privacy and secrecy of data. Other users in the network can save data in the shared drive and that will use up your disc space. Sharing data with an infected computer in the network can spread virus in the network. So, make sure that proper user rights are set and install effective an antivirus software to protect your computer from viruses.
