Router configuration in a Windows® 7 system.
What is the role of router configuration? What are the tips to configure a router in a Windows 7 system?
Router is an electronic device that helps in interconnecting with two or more computer networks, and selectively interchanges packets of data between them. The data packets contain address information which a router can use to determine if the source and destination are on the same network, or if the data packet must be transferred from one network to another. When multiple routers are used in a large collection of interconnected networks, the routers help in exchanging information about target system addresses. This is so that each router can build up a table showing the preferred paths between any two systems on the interconnected networks.
The role of router configuration and the tips to configure a router in Windows 7 are:
- Role of router configuration
- Connect the router
- Configuring the router
Role of router configuration
The router configuration lets you connect your Windows 7 based computer to the Internet. You will need to configure the router with your high speed modem and your computer. Then you can configure the router to access your Internet Service Provider’s server to connect your computer to the Internet. The configuration process is very simple and you can do it on your own.
Connect the router
You need to plug in the Ethernet cable into the 'Internet' port. This port is located on the back of your router, and then you can connect the computer to the router. You can do this by plugging another Ethernet cable in the Ethernet port provided on your computer. Attach the other end to one of the free ports on the back of the router. You are allowed to choose any free port except the one with 'WAN' labeled in it. Now you can plug in your router to the electrical outlet. Wait for the router to turn on by itself, and then reboot your computer so that it is able to access the new IP address from the router through the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
To configure, you can launch your web browser, type in 'http://192.168.1.1/' and press 'Enter'. Then, you can use 'Admin' as the username in the pop-up box and after this leave the password blank. Then connect to the Internet and click on 'Internet Setup'. Then you may need to select your connection type provided in the drop-down menu list. You can choose 'DHCP' for the cable modems or 'PPPoE' for most of the DSL modems. If you are not sure about these options, you can check with your ISP, then set the service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.
