Following are about work groups, its benefits and tips to set up workgroup:
- Benefits of workgroups
- Setting up of workgroup
A very nice feature of the Windows operating system is its ability to network computers together. The default network for the Windows operating system is generally called as ‘Workgroup’. That means it is the collection of computers that are on the local area network which would share common resources and responsibilities. The Microsoft Windows family of Operating Systems would support assigning of computers to named workgroups. As the number of systems in a workgroup grows, workgroup LANs would eventually become too difficult to administer and is being replaced with alternative solutions like domains or other client/server approaches.
Benefits of workgroups
The workgroups would then provide easy sharing of files, printers and other network resources. Since, it has got a peer-to-peer (P2P) network design, each workgroup computer might both share and access resources if configured to do so. Workgroups is generally designed for small LANs in homes, schools, and small businesses. A Windows Workgroup would function best with 15 or fewer computers. Time consumption could be greatly reduced.
When you set up a network, Windows would automatically create a workgroup. You could join an existing workgroup or could create a new one. Firstly, click Start button, Control Panel. Then click System and Maintenance, and then clicking System. Then under the Computer Name, Domain, and Workgroup Settings, you need to click Change settings. If you are prompted, give the administrator password .Then click ‘Name’ tab, and click ‘Change’. Then under ‘Member of’, you need to click ‘Workgroup’. To join the existing work group, you need to type the name of workgroup and then click ‘OK’. To create a new one, type the name of that work group and click ‘OK’. If you have changed the name of existing work group, a new work group would b created in that name.
