Software RAIDs in Windows® 7
Windows 7 is the latest operating system available from Microsoft. This operating system has got so many extra features as compared to other available operating systems in the market. Windows 7 is the successor to Windows Vista. The operating system is available in many editions, including Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate. Windows 7 officially supports Simple, Spanned, Striped (RAID-0) and Mirrored (RAID-1).The RAID-5 dynamic disks will only be available in Windows Server editions. It is noted that the dynamic disks are not available in the Standard/Home editions of Windows 7. There are two categories of RAID, such as software and hardware. The modes of this RAID will vary with different operating system.
Following points talk more about RAID in Windows 7 based computer system:
- Software RAID
- RAID0 and RAID 1
- Comparison of RAIDs
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. This is one method of improving the performance and also the reliability of your storage media by using multiple drives. Disks which are attached to servers can be turned into RAID arrays using built-in features on a number of operating systems. You need to connect the drives and then configure the RAID level you want. This RAID will do the processing on the server motherboard. Each software RAID is specific to the operating system.
RAID0 and RAID 1
RAID0 or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, Level 0 is also as called striping. It is a method of storing data on multiple system storage devices that are usually hard disks or disk partitions. This is by interleaving the data and spreading it across the devices and thus usually achieving faster read and write speeds. RAID 1 is an arrangement of hard disks which will create an exact copy (or mirror) of a set of data on two or more disks.
Unlike the software RAID, hardware RAID will require specialized hardware to handle the drives. The software RAID is considered to be cheaper than hardware RAID. Software RAID will take up a portion of the host processor, unlike hardware RAID. When compared to software RAID, hardware RAID is more reliable. A software RAID can be prone to data corruption, due to the fault of the RAID software or driver which is being used. This RAID can also get affected when system is heavily loaded. Disk hot swapping is possible in hardware RAID.
