Tips for Windows® 7 SSD
What are SSDs and how to use SSD in Windows 7?
SSD is the abbreviation of solid state drive. The SSD has been improved a lot in Windows 7. In Windows Vista, the SSDs are considered as similar to the SATA drive. So, you could not expect much speed for this SSD. In Windows 7, the read and write speed of the SSD is increased. Windows 7 will partition the SSDs more efficiently to lessen the redundant read-write cycles. Also, when Windows 7 detects an SSD, it could automatically disable defragmentation, since defragmenting could reduce the lifetime of Solid State Drives. When drives are defragmented, the read time will be improved, but since flash memory already has a high read rate and slow write rate, defragment is non effective for SSDs
Following are some of the tips to use the SSD in Windows 7:
- Enable write caching
- Disable indexing
- Disable defragmentation
Enable write caching
By enabling the write caching, you could improve the performance of the SSD. You could perform this by following some simple tasks. To start the process, you need to open the 'Device Manger' from the Control Panel. After this, you need to expand Disk drives and double click on the listed storage device that you want to enable write caching. After this, you have to click on the 'Policies' tab and by default, 'Enable write caching on the device' is checked under the Write-caching policy section. If it is not checked, you need to enable it.
Indexing creates and analyzes a database of file attributes. This could lead to multiple small writes when creating/deleting/modifying files. You also need to stop Windows 7 indexing the SSD. SSD drives search fast that Indexing is not needed. That means, while Windows 7 is indexing the SSD, it is slowing down your system. To do this, you need to open the Start Menu and right-Click on the My Computer. After this, you need to select 'Services and Applications'. You could disable the startup menu in the system.
The defragmentation might be useful to SSDs, but this feature is not available in the default Windows Defragmenter. For this, you need to open the Start Menu and right-click on the 'My Computer' option. There you could see the 'Manage' option followed by 'Services and Applications'. The disk defragmenter option can be disabled here.
