What are the various tips to make Windows 7 startup disk?

Most people do not pay a lot of attention to the process called ‘booting’ that goes on when they first turn on their PC. On the other hand, there might come a time when it is essential to get involved in the startup process in order to solve some problems and to make use of something called a start up disk or a “startup” disk as Microsoft sometimes calls it. You may go through life without ever having to use one, but similar to a spare tire for a car, a start up disk is something everyone should have. There are various versions of startup disks available, but the basic contents are some form of Operating System that would let you to run your PC from somewhere other than the hard drive.

Tips to create Windows 7 start up disk and its uses are given below:

  • Use of startup disk
  • Tips to create startup disk
  • Role of boot disk

Use of startup disk

A startup/boot disk would let you boot off of a disk other than your hard disk. This disk can be used to fix issues that may arise during the lifetime of your computer and/or to help load games. You should bear in mind that this disk is completely different from a restore CD that may have been included in your computer. After you have created a startup disk, it is strongly suggested that you write-protect the disk to stop virus infection in the system and to help the disk from being erased.

Tips to create startup disk

To start creating a boot disk, first click ‘Start Orb’ and then go to ‘Control Panel’. Here, choose ‘Backup your computer’ under the ‘System and Security’ option. Then, select ‘Create a system repair disk’. Lastly, choose your CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW drive from the new dialog window and click ‘Create Disc’. It would then start creating a disc instantly. Once it is done, press ‘OK’, label it, and save the disk in a secure location. The total file size of the recovery disk must be 164MB which means you can burn it to a CD instead of a DVD. Keep in mind that if you are using Windows 7 64-bit, the recovery disk must be made from same version of the Operating System; using a recovery disk from 32 bit is not recommended and vice versa.

Role of boot disk

Booting from a CD is sometimes essential to run advanced tools like memory testing programs and password recovery tools. You would also need to boot to a CD or DVD if you are planning to reinstall Windows 7 or run repair tools like a Startup Repair or System Restore. When you boot from a CD, you are actually running your computer with a small Operating System that is installed on the CD. When you start your computer normally, you are running with the Windows 7 Operating System installed in your hard drive. It is suggested that users create a recovery disk as soon as possible and keep it in a secure location. In case your Windows 7 Operating System, at any time, fails to boot, the startup disk can help to fix the problem.
