Microsoft® Windows® 7 and Microsoft® Windows® Vista Compatibility Modes
What are the compatibility issues with Windows 7 and WIndows Vista and the possible ways to fix these issues?
The Windows XP Mode lets you to run older Windows XP business software right on your Windows 7 desktop. This is designed with small- and medium-sized businesses in mind. It comes as a separate download and works only with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate. This Mode also requires virtualization software such as Windows Virtual PC. It works in two ways, both as a virtual Operating System and as a way to open programs within Windows 7. The Windows XP Mode runs in a separate window on the Windows 7 desktop, much like a program, except it is a fully functional version of Windows XP. You could access your physical computer's CD/DVD drive, install programs, save files, and perform other tasks as if you were using a computer running Windows XP.
The compatibility issues with Windows 7 and Vista and possible ways to fix them can be seen as follows:
- Application compatibility
- Issue with Licensing and Activating
- Issue with Accessing Help Files
There are very few applications left which still have incompatibilities with Microsoft operating systems as majority of the software producers have newer versions of their applications, which work on Windows Vista. You can try to run these applications in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode if you still encounter applications that are incompatible with Windows Vista. Also you can visit Windows Vista Compatibility Center to see if there are newer versions, which work on Windows Vista. Do not forget to keep all your applications updated with update notifier.
Issue with Licensing and Activating
If you have compatibility issues in Windows 7 and Winodws Vista, you can re-enter the license and re-activate the product every time you start it. This is because of a new "default" security implementation under Windows Vista and Windows 7, named User Account Control. Using this option turned on, ReliaSoft's license manager cannot store your license/activation information in the Registry on your computer. You can temporarily turn the User Account Control feature off, the license and activation application and then turn the option back on.
Microsoft has made the decision to stop supporting the WinHelp help file format in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, newer formats of help files are available online. Its newer products are distributed with HTMLHelp or Web Help, which are both fully compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft requires users to download the program to view 32-bit .HLP files, and then install it on their computers.
