Windows® 7 Vista Mode
What is the need of Windows 7 Vista compatibility mode? Explain ways to set up the compatibility of Windows 7
A compatibility mode is a mechanism in which a computer's Operating System emulates an older computer environment in order to allow the obsolete software to remain compatible with the computer's newer working conditions. So the Windows 7 or Vista compatibility mode runs the programs which were written for earlier versions. One of the striking features of Windows 7 Vista is its compatibility with Windows XP. So, if any program that doesn’t work in Windows 7 or Windows Vista but works in Windows XP can be made to work with the compatibility mode settings. Compatibility mode settings make changes in the specific application through various ways. It may change screen resolution, use limited colors, disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, disable display scaling on high DPI settings or you can set the privilege level.
Now let’s see the different compatibility methods:
- Through Properties Page
- Through Troubleshoot Compatibility
- Through Registry Editor
Through Properties Page
In this method, we use a simple technique. Right click on the concerned application icon. Select ‘Properties’ and then select the ‘Compatibility’ tab. In this tab, select the version on which the program would run. There are additional settings like display settings, screen settings, color settings etc. which change accordingly and you can make changes to all the users of the computer.
Through troubleshoot Compatibility
This is a much easier way compared to the first in which Operating System itself does the necessary compatibility check. Here, right click on the respective program icon and select ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’. The system takes some time for processing. Wait for further notifications. The two options are available i.e the recommended one and the custom settings. Do what you feel is the appropriate one.
This is a little difficult method. Press the ‘Start’ button and select ‘Run’ where you need to type ‘regedit’. Go to the location ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAppCompatFlags Layers. In the right pane of layers, right click on any empty area. Then click on ‘New’. Then on String Value, type in the full path of the concerned program's exe file and press ‘Enter’. Then modify it by selecting the entire location, type in a single or combination of data values for how you want to run the program and then click ‘OK’ to apply the settings. You can use the above wizard to disable compatibility.
