Windows® Easy Transfer Support
Most of the users, who want to upgrade to Windows 7 would prefer easiest path, as long as their personal data and favorite applications make the trip.
If you’re running Windows XP, upgrading won’t be as easy as inserting a disc and running the installation. Instead, you must back up your applications and files, format your hard drive and perform a clean install of Windows 7. After successful Windows 7 installation, you must either manually reinstall your software.
Reinstalling each and every applications is both complex as well as time taking process. However, Windows 7 offers a tool called Windows Easy Transfer that would help you while migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7.
This tool helps you to move system or application settings and data. Windows Easy Transfer enables you to copy your files, photos, music, emails, settings, and more from a computer running Windows XP to a system running Windows 7.
Windows Easy Transfer supports the following operating systems:
Windows XP (SP2 and higher) to Windows 7
Windows Vista (SP1 and higher) to Windows 7
Windows Easy Transfer supports transfers using any of the following methods:
USB Easy Transfer Cable
Removable media (such as a USB flash drive or external hard disk)
Follow steps to copy files using Windows Easy Transfer on XP computer:
STEP 1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD while running Windows XP.
STEP 2. Open Windows Explorer by right clicking the Start menu, and then clicking Explore.
STEP 3. Browse to the DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exe in the support\migwiz directory.
STEP 4. Click Next.
STEP 5. Select An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
STEP 6. Click This is My Old Computer. Windows Easy Transfer scans the computer.
STEP 7. Click Next. You can also determine which files should be migrated by selecting only the user profiles you want to transfer, or by clicking Customize.
STEP 8. Enter a password to protect your Easy Transfer file, or leave the box blank, and then click Save.
STEP 9. Browse to the external location on the network or to the removable media where you want to save your Easy Transfer file, and then click Save.
STEP 10. Click Next. Windows Easy Transfer displays the file name and location of the Easy Transfer file you just created.
Follow steps to transfer files and settings on Windows 7 computer:
STEP 1. If you saved your files and settings in an Easy Transfer file on a removable media such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive rather than on a network share, insert the removable media into the computer.
STEP 2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Windows Easy Transfer.
STEP 3. Click Next.
STEP 4. Click An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
STEP 5. Click This is my new computer.
STEP 6. Click Yes, open the file.
STEP 7. Browse to the location where the Easy Transfer file was saved. Click the file name, and then click Open.
STEP 8. Click Transfer to transfer all files and settings. You can also determine which files should be migrated by selecting only the user profiles you want to transfer, or by clicking Customize.
STEP 9. Click Close after Windows Easy Transfer has completed moving your files.
Well, there is some good news for Windows Vista users as they can easily upgrade to Windows 7 without performing a clean installation.
