Installation of Windows® 7 on a laptop
What are the various conditions that should be considered while installing Windows 7 on a laptop? What are the problems that may arise during the installation process?
Windows 7 is the latest Operating System from Microsoft and delivers improved performance. It comes equipped with a number of high-end features as well. It has three editions namely Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. The first one is for the home users, the second one for business and office purpose and the last one for the higher end powerful machines. The steps involved in installing Windows 7, regardless of the version, onto a laptop, are almost the same. The data in the laptop or notebook has to be stored in a different storage device like a pen drive or removable hard disk as a backup. Then prepare the external storage device using disk part utility. The installation files have to be copied. Change the boot device to the external storage. Select 'Custom installation' and re-create the primary drive partition. Wait for an hour since it takes some time for the Operating System to copy its files to the primary drive. After this, reconfigure the Operating System and restore the backup.
Some of the common problems associated with the installation of Windows 7 on laptops are:
- Boot manager missing
- Installing from working Windows XP
- Memory shortage
- Missing memory
- Unstable Windows home screen
Boot manager missing
This problem normally arises in the case of systems with a defective ISO. A defective ISO can hinder the boot manager from loading. To solve this problem, the start-up repair has to run on the primary partition containing Windows 7. This can help in fixing the problem of missing boot manager or MBR.
Installing from working Windows XP
If there is already a Windows XP on the hard drive, then the Windows cannot copy the files required for installation. The files will be shown as corrupt or missing. To solve this problem you have to check the authenticity of the Windows Operating System set-up that you have downloaded from the Internet. All files required for installation are to be made available and then restart installation.
At least 512 MB of RAM is essential for the installation of Windows 7 32 bit version. If this requirement is not met then the installation will fail. The motherboard version will also decide the eligibility of the system considered for the installation of Windows 7.
Sometimes after installing or during installation of Windows 7, the memory space displayed is less than the actual memory. To solve this, turn on the 'Memory Remap Feature' under North Bridge Configuration, under advanced, in the BIOS.
It normally occurs when the BIOS is old. So, visit the motherboard’s website and download and install the latest update. After this, unplug the machine and wait for a few minutes. Then plug back and use normally. One thing to be taken care of is to make sure that there is no power failure during the installation process.
