Like they say, it’s better be safe than sorry
When you are at a client’s office and you happen to be away from your laptop for a while, do you worry about someone breaking into it? Are you constantly thinking that your laptop is not safe enough? Is your password too easy to guess? Fret no more. There are some simple options in Windows 7 that can help you keep your laptop secure. Let’s find out what they are.
The simplest thing that you can do as a first line of defense is to lock your computer when you are away. You can do this by pressing the windows and the L key together. In order to unlock, just enter your user password which is managed through the user options in the Control Panel. As a further failsafe measure, you may enable the option that automatically locks your computer when it’s left idle for a few minutes. You can find this setting in the ‘personalize’ option of the context menu which appears when you right click anywhere on the desktop.
Even when you have your laptop locked, someone might try to break in by trying to make an educated guess for the password and punching it in multiple times. There is a remedy for this, you may set a limit on the number of times the computer will accept the password before it stop accepting them. You can change this setting from the Local Security Policy which is accessible via the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel.
Lastly, you want to make sure that your password is secure enough to not be easily guessed. Do not go with personal information like your name or your birthday. Make sure that the password is alphanumeric and isn’t too short. If you’re having trouble coming up with one, there are many password generator utilities online which can be used to randomly generate a strong password. You may then write this password and keep it in a safe place for reference.
These are few ways to make sure that your laptop is safe and secure no matter where you are working. Though simple and commonly used, you still can’t go wrong with these if you use them in the right manner.
