All Windows versions give you the option to change the hosts file. In fact, i think every operating system out there, including mac os has the same hosts file.
In win7 you could go to control panel / internet options and define blocked sites. Altering protected system files is not a tip i would give to beginners.

Gard is correct – windows 7 does not allow you to save the edited txt file that contains the block websites. Asks you save in my documents – which has not effect on the internet

    Hi

I am currently trying to alter the list “block websites” by editing the “host” wordpad document.

Whenever I attempt to save changes, a message pops up and says that I don’t have permission and I need to contact the adminstrator to obtain permission.

I’m not sure why I don’t have permission, I own the computer and I have an administrator account.

Can anyone help resolve this issue?

    •

Follow these steps, they may help:
      Step 1. Explore C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
Step 2. Look for a file named as hosts, then open it with Notepad not WordPad.
Make sure you are saving its duplicate copy you can’t make any kind of changes in original file.
Or use Parental Control feature- Parental Controls let parents restrict which games their children can play, which programs they can use, and which websites they can visit ,etc. This feature was originally introduced in Microsoft Windows Vista but was limited to website-filtering capabilities and some other basic features, but the upcoming Windows 7 has added many enhanced features to it. Now, you can easily control and monitor applications, games, emails and instant messaging, etc. Lets explore how we can use it in Windows 7.

STEP 1. You can access it from Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > Parental Control.

STEP 2. Now, select the account on which you want to add the parental control, click the particular account and a new windows will be opened where you will be presented with the list of options which you can use to enforce rules on the account.

STEP 3. From Time limits option, you can set the time when your child can use the computer, the blue boxes show the blocked time and white boxes show the allowed time to use computer.

STEP 4. Games option lets you configure which games your child can play.

STEP 5. Furthermore, you can also allow or block some specific programs from Allow and block specific program option. It has now become very easy for parents to restrict their children’s computer usage.

Danny just right click on hosts file go to preferences then open tab security and there set privileges for your account

  8.
    Cory

It will not let me edit the host file in Windows 7 Home; I’m the Administrator. It shows that “privileges” are already set.

  9.
    FadeWade (LazyJohn)

Hahaha! you guys are doing it all wrong..

    Remember this:

When using Windows 7.. do not open the “host” file directly..
Go to your programs first.. then find your notepad..
right click on it and then run as administrator (THIS WILL LET YOU EDIT THE SYSTEM FILE WITH COMPLETE PRIVILEGES).. now click on File>Open then type in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

then type the address you want to block e.g.

    127.0.0.1 http://www.myspace.com

Hehehe.. easy as eating pie.. :P

  10.
    bob

It does not let me do that and says i need to contact the administrator. how do i get it to work?

  11.
    Prakash

    Right click the “hosts”
    which located in “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc”
and go to “Security” tab , select your user name and give “Full Control”

    now u can edit..

    Or easy way..
copy the “hosts” file to some other location and make u’r changes and replace the old “hosts” “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc” with your New “hosts”..

    It works…

  12.
    Matt

Well I gave myself full access to editing the file and I put something to block on it but my virus scanner told me that the hosts file is now infected and it wont let me open it to remove the blocking saying access denied and it keeps popping up the blocker telling me to put it in the vault. :|

  13.
    Braken

For everyone concerned about not being able to save the file,
    -Copy the document to desktop
    -Write the changes
-Then try to replace the file by dragging it into the folder.

OR, if you really want to do it the hard way.

-activate the hidden administrator account and do it there
-and set it so it’s active for all users

  14.

U not able to access host file in user login.
If u want to edit host file u want to must login in administrator or change permission host file
then after u able to access ad edit host file.

  15.

    Follow these steps : -

    1. Type ‘CMD’ (without quotes) in the search box and when u see cmd.exe…right click on it and click “Run as Administrator”. Command prompt will open in C:\Windows\System32 folder.

    2. Change directory to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc. Then type “Notepad hosts” (without quotes) and press enter.

    3. Make ur changes and save. It will be saved. Enjoy.

    Gudiya

Dear Pushpendra, the technique which u have given is absolutely fantastic. but there’s a problem. i want to block the networking sites. but it shows an error that “one or more administrator accounts do not have a password. As long as an administrator account has no password, any user can bypass or turn off parental controls”. it also gives me permission to create one more account. but its obvious that the parental controls on one account wont be applicable to another account. and i do not want to add password. i just want to block the sites.. please help me…

  17.
    Gudiya

like others m also facing problem in making changes in host file… I open the file in notepad and when i try to save the file it says that i cannot save any file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc. But when i open the host fiel in wordpad and after making changes when i save the file it says that “Access is denied”. Please help me….

    Folks,
All of this is unnecessary. In Windows Vista, you can block websites easily using Parental Controls. In Windows 7, by default website blocking is not included, so you have to download Windows Live Family Safety (part of the Windows Live Essentials package) or another “third-party” provider. Then Live Family Safety will show up in Parental Controls and you are good to go.

  24.

    •1
Open Internet Explorer, click on the “Tools” tab and then on the “Internet Options” tab.

    •2
Enable the Content Advisor. Once the “Internet Options” tab is opened, click on the word “Content” and then click “Enable” found under the title “Content Advisor.”

    •3
Disable the website. From the “Content Advisor” click on the “Approved Sites” tab and enter the URL of the website you wish to block. Click the “Never” tab and submit the change by adding a password you will be able to remember easily.

  33.
    Squee

First of all, to all of you telling us to just use Parental Controls… did you ever consider that we’re actually trying to block a website from someone else other than just our kids? For example, my fiancee that I live with keeps looking at porn on my laptop, so I’m going to just block them permanently. Parental Controls are fairly easy to figure out for adults, and usually tell you that the site is blocked when you try to visit it, which would make me blocking the site a waste of my time as he’d just unblock it the moment he figures out what I did.

Secondly, I had the same issue with saving the changes to the original “Host” file. I saw someone mention this:

-Copy the “Host” file and paste it to your desktop
-Open the “Host” file on your desktop (NOT the original, the COPY)
-Make the changes to the copy version of “Host” (that’s on your desktop)
    -Save the file
-Drag the Now Changed copy of “Host” from your desktop OVER to the original “Host” file in System32/drivers/etc
-Follow the prompts necessary to permanently REPLACE the original file with the copy.

I tried this and it worked brilliantly. It saved just fine, AND the site is blocked. What’s even better, all it says when you try to visit the site is “Unable to connect – Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at (website)”. Unless you’re the one who blocked it, you’ll just assume the browser or internet is just having a problem. Perfect solution for keeping your boyfriend/fiancee/hubby from visiting less than respectable sites behind your back :) .

Attention Guys: (This instruction was effective and easy by FadeWade (LazyJohn)) Enjoy! :)

  35.
    Thomas

I think you are missing a step for this to work. First, Go to Control Panel–>Programs–>Turn Windows features on or off and select “Internet Information Services” from the list features.

    Then do as Comp-Engr Says:
Go to your programs first.. then find your notepad..
right click on it and then run as administrator (THIS WILL LET YOU EDIT THE SYSTEM FILE WITH COMPLETE PRIVILEGES).. now click on File>Open then type in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
then type the address you want to block

  36.
    Cody

The best way to block a website on windows is to use something like 123BlockMe, especially if you can’t get your hosts file to work.

  37.
    Pushpraj

    For WINDOWS 7

    Explore C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Right click on Host file–> properties–>security–>single click on Administrators—>Edit—>Administrators—>full control–>ok.

    Than same process

Step 2. Look for a file named as hosts, then open it with Notepad.

Step 3. At the bottom of the file, add the line as shown below:
    127.0.0.1 http://www.blockingsite1.com

We have just shown you http://www.blockingsite 1.com as example only, replace it with the actual URL so that they are inaccessible to all.

Step 4. Simultaneously if you have more websites that would like to be blocked, just press Enter and repeat
step 3 to add additional URL until all desired websites are added. Now make “Enter” at the last line of the UR

Step 5. Save and close the file.

    step 6. restart your computer.

  38.
    Samantha

I did it so but my 15 year old kid has found a way to access blocked site. Because of that i decided to try a software solution and so far it works fine.

  40.
    Glen

Right click on Local Disk (C:)>Properties > Security Tab > Users > Edit > Allow Full Control

to be able to edit the Host file.

Add (for example) at the bottom of the file

    127.0.0.1 facebook.com

enter to add another line and always start with 127.0.0.1

do not add http:// or www. it does not work that way

    Hit Save (Ctrl+s)

check after a couple of minutes

    Goodluck! hope this helps

Were you not able to save the change or did the site not get blocked? If you use Internet Explorer, you can also use the ‘Content Advisor’ to block the sites.

      1. Launch ‘Internet Explorer’.
      2. Click ‘Tools’ at the top right and select ‘Internet Options’.
      3. Go to the ‘Content’ tab and click ‘Enable’ under ‘Content Advisor’.
      4. Go to ‘Approved Sites’, type the name of the site and click ‘Never’.
      5. Click OK on the dialog boxes to apply the changes.

      Hope it helps.

Here is the simplest way to block or allow websites in Windows 7. Open Control Panel, Click on Network and Internet tab, Click on Internet Options, Click the Content tab, Look down below Parental Controls and Click Enable under Content Advisor, the User Account Control(UAC) will open up the Content Advisor for you, Click Approved Sites,Type website address in the Allow this website box, then click Never to block or Always to allow website. A list of approved and blocked sites will be stored there for you to manage.

Hope this helps. Also, you can do this in your router settings if you are familiar with that.
