Windows® 7 Cannot Remove Printer
Get to know more about removing printer from a Windows 7 system
The most common way to remove a printer is to remove it directly from your PC in a few clicks. But if it does not work out, you need to know about the problems in detail. If the problems are with registries, you must solve the issue. Another reason you cannot remove a printer is if you have items in the print queue. If items are waiting to print when you try to remove a printer, Windows will wait until the printing is complete, and then you will have to remove the printer. If you have authorization to manage documents on the printer, you can also cancel all print jobs and then try to remove the printer again.
Here are tips for for removing printers from your Windows 7 system:
- Correct Procedure for Removal
- Clean Registry Entries
- Remove Network Printers
Correct Procedure for Removal
Open printers by clicking 'Start' button, then click 'Control Panel', then click 'Hardware and Sound'. Now click 'Printers'. Now right click the printer that you want to remove, and then click 'Delete'. If you cannot remove the printer, right click it again, click 'Run' as administrator, and then click 'Delete' if you are asked for an administrator password or verification. Type the password or provide the required confirmation.
Clean Related Registry Entries
Printers install stuff throughout the registry and "delete" does not get rid of all these registry entries from your PC. So if you want to remove the printer from PC, first remove the entries specifically referring to your printer from the registry (carefully). You can take the assistance of a software expert if you are unaware about dealing with the registries. You can also use a registry cleaner program to remove those registry files. But before that, remember to take the backup of the registry.
To remove network printers, click 'Start', 'Run' and then type in "regedit" and press 'Enter'. This will open the Windows registry editor. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER – Printers – Connections. Here you will see all the network printers with the server name first, then a comma, and then the name of the actual printer. Now click on the printer in the left menu and press the 'Delete' button or right-click and choose 'Delete'. After this, you have to delete the printer from one more location in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – SYSTEM – CurrentControlSet – Control – Print – Providers – LanMan Print Services – Servers – Printers. Under the Printers key, you must expand it and see the name of the print server that actually hosts the printer you want to remove. Expand the print server key and remove the printer from the list. Close the Windows registry and reboot your PC.
