Windows® 7 DNS Server
What are the various methods to configure Windows 7 to use local DNS server?
DNS means domain name system. It is the standard technology for managing the names of websites and also other Internet domains. This DNS technology would allow you to type names into your Web browser. And the computer would automatically find that address on the Internet. The main key element of the DNS is a worldwide collection of DNS servers. A DNS server is any system which is registered to join the domain name system. This server would run special-purpose networking software. Few of the domain name servers on the Internet would provide DNS resolutions for anyone who requests it of them. These are called as 'Public DNS Servers'. These servers are public on purpose.
Following are the features of DNS server, role of TCP\IP settings and the configuration to local DNS server:

Features of DNS server
A DNS server generally runs special-purpose networking software. This would feature a public IP address. This would contain database of all the network names and also the addresses for other Internet hosts. The DNS servers would communicate each other using private network protocols. They are organized in a hierarchy. At the top, there are root servers and they store complete database of Internet domain names and the IP addresses. Internet has got 13 root servers. All other DNS servers are present in the lowest levels. When a DNS server receives a request which is not in the database, it would transform in to DNS client. And then passes the request to other DNS server in the higher level of hierarchy.
Role of TCP/IP settings
TCP/IP means Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. It is the basic communication language or protocol which is needed for the Internet. This could be used as communications protocol in a private network. When you are being set up with access to Internet, your system is provided a TCP/IP program. This program is two level program. Upper layer deals with the assembling of data into packets and the lower layer deals with addressing of these packets. You have to set the TCP/IP settings in order to connect to the Internet.
Configuration to local DNS server
Go to Windows 7 Control Panel. In the 'Network and Internet', select the option 'View network status and tasks'. Then click 'Change adapter settings'. After that, you would right-click your Internet connection's icon. Then select 'Properties'. You would select the 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' item and then click 'Properties' button: After doing this you need to select 'Use the following DNS server addresses'. You should enter the IP address of the local DNS server (*) as the Preferred DNS server. Then click OK.
