Configure the backup
By default, the backup is not configured automatically in Windows 7. It works in three steps, where, what and when to backup. You can set the backup location according to your choice such as DVD, external hard drive or network drive. You need to select the files that need to be backed up, like pictures, documents and other personal files. You can either add a folder or add the files individually. Next is to schedule the time and day the backup needs to be performed.
Backup the files
Once you have configured the backup, the files will be backed up according to the schedule which you have set. Once you have configured the backup, you can monitor the progress from the backup and restore window. If you want to run a backup without a schedule, you can select the option 'Backup now' which will start the backup process. This utility can be launched from Backup and Restore option in 'Control Panel'.
When the files are backed up, it creates a folder named 'WindowsImageBackup' in the backup drive. Double clicking on the backup file allows you to manage or restore the files. Also, you can use 'Restore my files' which is in the Backup and Restore Center. Then, select the files which you need to restore and select the location where you would like to restore them, whether you would like to get them restored to the original location or to another location.
