Customization Options in Start Menu
Start menu is the user interface tool used in Windows 7. Through Start menu various applications and programs can be launched at quick rate. It consists of customizable list of programs for the user to launch and most recent opened files. The opening of programs through Start menu is faster than through Explorer. Start menu has options to launch Pictures, Music, Games, Recent Items, Computer, Control Panel, Devices and Printers, Default Programs, Administrative tools, Help and Support and Run. The menu is customized; user can add or remove options in them. For example Run and recent items are not presented as default in Windows 7. By going in to the properties and navigating to the Customize button. Here user can disable or enable different windows as per requirement.
The following details given below provide various customization steps of Start Menu:
- Adding Videos, Internet Search
- Adding More Recent Programs tab
- Points to keep in mind on doing the customization
Adding Videos, Internet Search
You can add videos to the Start menu which is absent from default. Proceed to Start menu, select Properties, and select Customize. Select Display as a link in Videos and Videos will be in Start menu. For adding Internet Search to start menu, type gpedit.msc in the search box. Proceed to Local Group Policy Editor and then User Configuration Administrative Templates Start Menu and Taskbar. Under settings, select ‘Add Search Internet link to Start Menu. Navigate and you will see Internet Explorer in the Start menu.
Adding More Recent Programs Tab
For showing recent menu tab, you have to first decrease the size of icons to small. This is necessary because otherwise it would make the Start menu large. Go to Start menu and then Properties and proceed to customize button. It is possible to change the number of recent tabs by opening regedit.exe through search box. You can navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer to add necessary additions to make the number change of the recent tabs.
For making an option in the desktop as a shortcut menu in the desktop, you must enable context menus, dragging, and dropping. If you wish to see the newly installed programs, you can enable highlight newly installed programs. Selecting the option “Open Submenus When I Pause on Them with the Mouse Pointer” will be better for the use with just a click. Lastly, you must enable things which you need frequently because too many options can crowd the Start menu, but don’t leave the necessary things like the above discussed one.
