Hibernation is a useful feature that comes with most of the laptops. The main aim of this feature is to save all your programs and documents while you are away from your computer for a long time, and at the same time, save energy consumption while the laptop is still on. In hibernation, your open programs and documents are kept on your hard disk and then the computer is turned off. If you are using a laptop, you can use the hibernation feature when you know that you will not be using the laptop for some time and you will not be able to recharge your battery too during this.
Why disable Windows 7 'Hibernate'?
Although Windows 7 hibernation is a useful feature, it consumes a good amount of space on your computer system and if you are already short of space, then you may need to disable the hibernation option. Basically, there are two ways of doing that: through power options and through command prompt.
If you are want to disable Windows 7 hibernation through your computer’s power options, then go to 'Control Panel' and click on 'Change when the computer sleeps' option. Click on 'Change advanced power settings' after which a dialog box for changing 'Advanced' settings will appear. In this box, you will see a 'Sleep' option and a 'Hibernation' option underneath it. Click on 'Hibernate After' option which will expand the tab and you can easily change the value to 'Never' from whatever time has been set for hibernation.
If you are more comfortable with the command prompt, then click on 'Start' button, type 'CMD' and click on 'Run' as 'Administrator'. Now type 'powercfg.exe /hibernate off' and hit 'Enter'. After this, your Windows 7 'Hibernate' option will be disabled.
