Windows® 7 Hibernate Settings
What is the importance of the Hibernation option in Windows 7?
Hibernation in Windows 7 is a power-saving state intended primarily for laptops. While the sleep mode puts your work and settings in memory and consumes a small amount of power, Hibernation puts your open documents and programs on your hard disk and then turns off your PC. Out of all the power-saving states, Hibernation uses the least. You could use hibernation settings when you would not use your laptop for an extended period and if you did not have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time. The Windows 7 Hibernation stores unsaved data such as information about open programs to a special file called hiberfil.sys. It ensures data safety even if you switched of the mains and took out the battery. If you wish to use the Hibernate option, be careful that Disk Cleanup operations do not delete hiberfil.sys. There are two types of hibernation problems. The first is when your PC would not wake up properly and when there would be a "No hibernate" option in the Shut Down menu. And the second is when Windows 7 would not have adequate space for hiberfil.sys. For the former, check the 'Allow Hybrid sleep' setting and tackle the later with enhanced disk space. Certain systems require up to 4GB memory.
Following are the details on the uses of Hibernate option in Windows 7 Operating System:
- Save data
- Save power
- Ensure data safety
Windows 7 Hibernation stores unsaved data in a special file called hiberfil.sys. When your system restarts, it loads the data stored in hiberfil.sys and returns the system to its exact state when you set it to hibernate. Hiberfil.sys is a hidden file, which is located in the c: drive. In order to see this file, you will have to adjust your Explorer's settings. For this, press the 'Alt' key and click on the 'View' tab. Scroll down to 'Hidden files and folders' and select the 'Radio' button next to 'Show hidden files and folders'.
Another use of hibernation is its power saving ability. It uses least amount of power of all the power saving modes in laptop. Hibernation setting puts all your open programs on the hard disk and turns off the system.
Ensure data safety
Hibernation option ensures data safety in the system. Data stored will not be removed even if the user switches off the mains and takes out the battery. It saves the data in hard disk and always makes sure that Disk Cleanup operation does not delete the hiberfil.sys file.
