When connecting a laptop working on Windows 7 operating system to a network there could be lot of issues that one may face. However, troubleshooting the issues is easy as Windows 7 is loaded with diagnostics and repair tools. There are two types of connection that can be established between Windows 7 laptop and network and i.e. wired and wireless.
The following are some of the issues one may face while connecting Windows 7 laptop to a network and tips to resolve them:
- Error message “Duplicate IP address in the network”
- Cannot connect to the network and share files
- Network connection is extremely slow
Error message “Duplicate IP address in the network”
“Duplicate IP address in the network” is the error which occurs when there is an IP address conflict within the network. The conflict is mostly observed when addresses are manually entered. There could be two works around, either the network can be set to static instead of dynamic where DHCP has a role to play, the next option would be remove the static IP address and use the dynamic IP address assigned by the DHCP client. Go to “start, control panel, network and Internet, network and sharing center”, right click on the “local area connection” and select “TCP-IP v4” and click on “properties”. Remove any static IP address and change the setting to obtain an IP address automatically.
Cannot connect to the network and share files
If the laptop is unable to connect to the network and you cannot share files within the network, then click on “start, control panel, network and Internet”. Under “network and Internet”, click on “network and sharing center”. There must be few network related options, search for the one which says, “network discovery”. Click on the arrow next to it and select "ON network discovery". Apply the changes. Right below network discovery, there must be file sharing. Similarly click on the arrow next to it and turn it on. If you wish to share the printer and folders and files there are options below to do that.
Network connection is extremely slow
If the connection speed is extremely slow then the first step would be check on any updates on the driver online. The manufacturers of the network adaptor bring in updates time to time; check it out on the manufacturer’s site. Run a virus scan to ensure that the system has not got infected by any virus or spyware. The Internet connection is impacted by virus being on the system. Delete all the temporary files and folders. Most importantly, identify whether it is the system or it is the Internet connection which is allow and accordingly the resolution must be followed.
