Solutions to Problem of Windows® 7 Not Sleeping
What are the various ways to fix the problem of Windows 7 not sleeping?
You know the pause function used in DVD players i.e. if you want to stop the video display, you simply click 'Pause'. Similarly, the computer also stops displaying and remains still when we apply 'Sleep'. The computer automatically goes to the power saving state, stores data in the memory, and uses very little power to remain in this position. It wakes up and goes to its remaining operation when you want to continue its function. But due to some reasons, it doesn't sleep as per the user's command. It happens because of the following reasons - the video card the user used may not support the sleeping function; sleep function is in OFF state in computer’s Basic Input Output System. Due to these reasons, you cannot access sleep function.
Best methods to fix this problem are given below:
- Updating drivers
- Withdraw wakeup devices
- Set the power options correctly
If no sleeping occurs due to the video card, update all the drivers. You can download the update program for drivers. Then run it on the Windows 7 Operating System. The user can also search the manufacturer's website and updating can be done from there as well. For updating hardware drives, click 'Control panel' and go to the device manager. Pointing the cursor on each device, right click and go to 'Update driver' option. It updates the selected drive automatically.
Withdraw wakeup devices
Some hardware devices are capable of automatically waking up the system before the sleeping function terminates. Universal Serial Port flash drives and mice are examples of such devices. You can disable the hardware component for accessing sleeping function of the Windows Operating System. To withdraw a device from waking up, please do the following - Go to 'Control panel', click 'System and security' and select the device manager. Find out the hardware device you wanted to disable and double click it. Then go to 'Power Management' tab and disable the device.
Windows will not sleep if you do not configure the power settings correctly. If the problem arises due to this, please do the following. When you click the 'Start' menu, the search box appears, and then enter power sleep. A page which contains the message "Change when the computer sleeps" will appear. Then click it. When the option "Put the computer to sleep" appears, increase the time duration to 15 or 30 minutes. Go to the bottom and click "Change advanced power settings". Go to allow wake timers in the 'Sleep' option and ensure that it is in disabled state.
