Windows® 7 NTBackup
Give a description of the removable storage manager.
In Windows Vista and the succeeding Operating Systems, NTBackup was replaced by Windows Backup and Restore Center, which make use of the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file format, and help in the backup to modern media such as DVDs and image-based, full system backups. NTBackup is the backup application brought in Windows NT and part of all succeeding Operating Systems up to and including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 Operating Systems, where it is built-in. It uses a proprietary backup format (BKF) which is also known as 'Microsoft Tape Format' or MTF to back up files in your PC. Files can be backed up to tape, ZIP drives, or hard disks and this also features incorporation with Task Scheduler and has a number of command line switches for scheduled backups (which are done automatically).
Features of NTBackup and removable storage manager in your system are mentioned below:
- Features of NTBackup
- NTBackup cannot be used in Windows 7
- Removable storage manager
Features of NTBackup
Beginning with Windows Server 2008 Operating System, Microsoft has replaced NTBackup with Windows Server Backup, which includes the new wbadmin command. This new backup application, wbadmin, would not support tape drives any more, which means that users have to install third-party applications to back up to tape on these new Operating Systems. NTBackup supports a few Operating System features such as backing up the computer's System State. NTBackup would also support Encrypting File System, NTFS hard links and junction points, alternate data streams, disk quota information, mounted drive, and remote storage information. In addition, NTBackup can use detachable media devices that are supported natively by the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) component of the Windows Operating System. NTBackup from Windows XP Operating System and later includes Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) support and can thus back up even locked files.
NTbackup cannot be used in Windows 7
For reading or restoring older backups, Microsoft has introduced the NTBackup Restore utility which is capable of reading BKF files only. This utility can only be used oi Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Operating System. It cannot be used in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 as it depends on Removable Storage Manager, which is a section that has been removed from these Operating Systems.
You shall use RSM to manage online libraries such as changers and jukeboxes and track detachable tapes and disks. Removable storage manager facilitates communication between removable media storage systems and data management programs such as Windows Backup and Remote Storage Server (RSS). RSM labels, catalogs, and tracks all media, organizes the drives, slots, and doors, and offers uniform drive cleaning operations.
