Learn more about tips to resize partitions in your Windows 7 system.
Windows 7 is the latest operating system from Microsoft. Windows 7 allows you to stream live videos, media files within the Windows Media Player. Also it might support for virtual hard disks and additional file formats. Windows 7 Disk Management comes with ability to shrink and expand system partition. When you upgrade Windows 7 from Windows Vista or install Windows 7 on the partition that runs Windows XP before, you might get issue with partition sizefor being it too small in order to install Windows 7. Since many files are stored on this partition you cannot delete other partitions and reset the partitions. You have an option of taking backup of the files and reset the partitions to install Windows 7, but it will be time consuming. In such situation you can resize the partition. Also when you have used Windows 7 for a long period, your system partition space becomes lower and needs to be expanded, or you want to shrink a large partition to create more partitions. Then you need to resize partitions in Windows 7.
The following are the tips to resize partitions in Windows 7:
- Shrink a partition
- Extend a partition
- Things to be kept in mind
Shrink a partition
In order to resize the partition, the first step is to shrink the partition. For that in the Disk Management screen, you need to right click on the partition that you need to get shrinked. After that, click on 'Shrink Volume' from the menu. Also in the Shrink dialog, you need to enter the value that you want to shrink by, not the new size. For example, if you want to shrink your 50 GB partition by roughly 10 GB so that it will now be roughly 40 GB, then you need to enter 10000 into the box.
Extend a partition
The second step in the resizing of partitions is to extend the partition. For that, in the Disk Management screen, you need to right-click on the partition that you need to shrink, and then hit upon 'Extend Volume' from the menu. On this screen, you can also specify the value that you want to increase the partition by. For example, you can extend it back to the roughly 50 GB sizes that it was before. The extend partition feature only works with contiguous space.
Before resizing the partition, you need to defragment the partition since certain files in disk might not be capable of being moved while resizing the partition. It can be only moved by defragmentation. Also before resizing the partition, you need to backup your important data. It is always better if there is nothing in the partitions at the time of resizing.
