Tweak the performance of Windows® 7
Discuss the various steps to enhance the performance of Windows 7.
Windows 7 is one of the newer generation operating systems from Microsoft. This OS has become very successful. Windows 7 has many advanced features compared to other previous versions of OS. Windows Search (for finding flies on the hard disk), Windows Gadgets (for quick access to applications), Windows Aero (part of enhanced Graphical User Interface), Windows Defender (in-built security software), two-way firewall, DirectX 11 etc. are some of the features of Windows 7. Windows 7 is a performance oriented Operating System. Windows 7 makes any computer installed with this OS more secure and reliable. Microsoft has also removed all of the bugs from Windows 7 because of which users are guaranteed better performance than other Operating Systems. However, if users feel that the performance of Windows 7 needs to be improved; this can be done with a few tweaks to the OS.
Following details mentioned below provides users more information about tweaks to improve the performance of Windows 7:
- Disable Windows Aero
- Turn off search feature
- Use Readyboost
Disable Windows Aero
Windows Aero is a part of the improved GUI. Windows Aero makes the OS more visually appealing. Although Windows 7 makes the system eye catching, it consumes a lot of unwanted resources. Disabling Windows Aero would drastically increase the performance of the system as system resources would be left over and users would be able to utilize them for tasks such as execution of very large applications or multitasking. The Aero theme and effects can be disabled in the properties tab of display settings.
Turn off search feature
Windows 7 comes with a default search feature. This has been designed to making finding files on the system easier. The search feature may be constantly running in the background and indexing newer files or associations being created on the system during normal use. This uses up system resources and slow down the system. Windows 7 users can turn off this feature and (use it only when required) to increase performance of the system. The search feature can be disabled under manage options, by right clicking 'My computer' and under 'Services and Applications'.
Readyboost is a feature in Windows 7 that can be used to increase the performance of the system. With the Readyboost feature users can convert any normal flash drive to additional RAM. With extra memory or RAM available, the performance of the system would increase because more memory would be available for executing applications and performing related tasks. Readyboost feature can be turned on by right clicking on the USB device icon in the My Computer window after USB device has been plugged in.
