Windows 7: Print directory tree

Trishna About Trishna

When she is not writing or excavating technological findings throughout the internet, she is busy checking the latest apps and gadgets for herself…

Your Windows 7-based PC offers you a host of flexible options that can make your tasks easier; having a tree-structure with all the major and minor directories and folders viewable at a glance is just one of them to name. For the uninitiated, a tree-structure of folders at one platform can help you a great deal especially when you are auditing your PC to distinguish between the important and the lesser ones and also when you are removing unused and junk folders. This is an extremely easy task and you should be able to complete it in a jiffy.

The easy step solution to the above issue is as:

1. Click on the Start Menu.
2. Type ‘cmd’ in the search box.
3. Once the program link appears right-click ‘cmd.exe’ and select ‘Run as administrator’.
4. Click ‘Yes’ in the User Account Control dialog box.
5. In the command prompt window, navigate to the folder you want to print the tree for. For instance, if you want it for the entire partition, type cd(Space)\ and then press ‘Enter’.
6. Now, type ‘tree> tree.txt /a /f’ and then press ‘Enter’.
7. A file named tree.txt will be created and placed in the same folder.
8. It will contain a complete list of the contents of the folder.
9. You can print or email the organized content list easily.

Simple, isn’t it? Besides viewing the directories, you can also take a print out of the same and keep it handy.
