Windows® Authentication in Windows® 7
What is integrated Windows authentication and how to enable Windows Authentication in Windows 7?
Windows Authentication is the process of communication between the user and the Windows to perform proper authentication. There are different types of authentication methods that are basic authentication, anonymous authentication, integrated authentication etc. Basic authentication and the anonymous authentication methods authenticate the user with the user name and the password. The user could login only after providing these details to the Windows server. But in the case of integrated authentication, these details are not necessary and the user could login with the help of the available details. If the Windows Server could not authenticate user with these details, the user needs to provide the password. In this case, the password is not transmitted to the server.
Following are some of the types of integrated Windows authentication:
- Client authentication
- Registration of services
Basic authentication is a type of Windows authentication and is widely used by all business organizations. This authentication process collects the username and password to provide proper authentication of the user. Different basic authentication, Integrated Windows Authentication does not access the username and password initially. Only the current details of the user are taken for authentication. If these details are failed to authorize the user, then the username and password are taken from the user. Internet Explorer will ask user for the correct username and password maximum up to three times. If the user login as a domain user, then the username and password are not necessary.
Registration of services
The default method used for the network authentication is known as the Kerberos. If a service is to be registered, then that service must be registered with the Kerberos with the Service Principal Name in the Active Directory. If the SPN is different from the active registry, then the user could register the service manually also. But the main thing is that the service can use only one name to register with the Kerberos. If any changes occur in the login name of the service, the service must be registered under the new account.
To configure the integrated authentication of Windows, you need the Internet Information Services (IIS) manager in your system. This is a graphical interface used for configuring the applications in web. You could set security, reliability etc. features with the help of this IIS. To configure this, you need to take the IIS manager and then double-click on the Local Computer. There you could see the 'Properties' option in the Web folder.
