Tips to Windows® 7 – Yahoo!® Messenger compatibility
Don’t lose features of Yahoo! Messenger while upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7.
What is the issue?
Windows 7 will no longer support the older Yahoo! Messenger. Therefore, you risk losing your messages photos, search, Yahoo! games etc when you install the latest version of Windows.
Why?
You may lose the features of Yahoo! Messenger as the new OS will be having some registry conflicts with the older version of the messenger.
How to retain the older or archive mail, photos, games etc in Yahoo! Messenger?
You will have to first locate the messages with the cmd prompt on your Windows XP PC and copy them. Follow the steps:
Step 1 On your keyboard, press Windows Logo+R to open the “Run” command.
Step 2 Copy and paste the “%ProgramFiles%\Yahoo!\Messenger\” text into the Run command, then click OK.
Step 3 Now copy the file and take a back up for this.
Step 4 Now in the system first format the hard drive and then install the Windows 7 with suitable official website link of Microsoft. If you want to create a Virtual hard disk, you can install without formatting the hard disk. But first check the compatibility of your system to Windows 7.
Install the latest Yahoo! Messenger from the website of messenger.yahoo.com, Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 being its latest version. Here, you first download it and then run and accept the agreement form. Now, the Yahoo! Messenger is ready for use with the Windows 7.

try to install the latest version of ym
installed latest ym in windows 7 but it doesnt recognize the mic. i had the same issue with skype but after updating with the latest skype version, the mic was recognized. but not for ym until now.

It possibly could be an issue with the java script and vb script. Try to register the files using the below mentioned steps:
- Click start
- Click Run
- Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and click ok
- Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and click ok
